Thousands of ethnic Armenians fled Nagorno-Karabakh — an Armenian-populated enclave of Azerbaijan — on Monday, after the decades-old separatist state and its fighters were defeated in a supposed “anti-terrorism” operation conducted by Azerbaijan’s military forces.

Following the purportedly “illegally-settled” Armenian’s army defeat and surrender, at least 6,650 refugees successfully crossed into Armenia on Monday, officials confirmed. The numbers continue to climb.

Leadership of the 120,000 Armenians who once called Nagorno-Karabakh home said its people do not want to live as part of Azerbaijan anymore and are heading to Armenia in fear of persecution and ethnic cleansing — which Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says has already begun.

The ethnic Armenian leadership said it would remain in place until those who want to leave what they call Artsakh are able to escape. Residents were urged to hold back from crowding roads, but promised free fuel in aid of their departures.
