Hamas's political leader Ismail Haniyeh has confirmed that three of his sons and four of his grandchildren have been killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza.

They were targeted while travelling in a car at Al-Shati camp near Gaza City. It’s reported that they were on their way to a family celebration to mark the first day of the Muslim holiday of Eid.

Mr Haniyeh has been centrally involved in negotiations seeking to broker a ceasefire in the war in Gaza, in return for the release of hostages held by Hamas. Mr Haniyeh condemned what he called “the treacherous and cowardly strike” but said the attack would not affect his search for a peace deal.

Israel has confirmed that it carried out the attack, describing the sons of Mr Haniyeh as “Hamas military operatives”. The statement did not mention the deaths of Mr Haniyeh's four grandchildren.

Ismail Haniyeh is widely considered Hamas's overall leader and has been a prominent member of the movement since 1980. He was elected head of Hamas's political bureau in 2017.

Hamas-led gunmen attacked Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostage.

More than 33,000 people in Gaza, ,the majority civilians, have been killed during Israel's offensive there since the October attack, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

For days, Iranian officials have been vowing to attack Israel, and the country appears to have followed up on that threat Saturday, launching a number of drones toward Israel. This came on the same day as a group of Iranian military commandos stormed and seized an Israeli-affiliated container ship near the Strait of Hormuz. As Mackenzie Gray reports, the attack comes after one of Tehran's diplomatic facilities in Syria was recently destroyed in an Israeli airstrike.

In Australia, at least six people are dead after a stabbing rampage inside a Sydney shopping mall. It happened at a Westfield shopping centre in Bondi Junction, a Sydney suburb. Police say the lone suspect had no clear motive or ideology, and was eventually shot dead by a female officer, hailed a hero. Nearly all of the victims are women. Catherine Urquhart reports on the indiscriminate attack, and more on what is known about the killer.

An Ontario man who suffered a medical emergency in Costa Rica says he feels stranded abroad. His family is working to bring him back, but with all the paperwork in order, they say there's still a major obstacle in their way: a lack of available hospital beds back home. As Sean O'Shea reports, their story isn't unique — and for many Canadians, the problem only seems to be getting worse.

The latest numbers show cases of Invasive Group A Strep hit a new peak in 2023 and this year appears to follow that trend. A recent cluster of deaths in the Maritimes has families pushing for better awareness. Heidi Petracek explains what one expert says is still desperately needed to fight strep, and speaks to the mother of a child who survived a close call.

Indigenous communities are sounding the alarm as the wildfire season gets underway. On Wednesday, the federal government announced new funding to help the 48 First Nations in Alberta hire emergency management coordinators, promising that more funding would be on the way. But with wildfires already sparking evacuation orders, several chiefs tell Global News that the announcement is both too little and too late. Heather Yourex-West reports.

With just months away from the Summer Olympics in Paris, athletes from around the world will be vying for Olympic glory and gold. Usually, those are the only prizes any victorious Olympian will be walking away with — but one Olympic sport will soon raise the stakes by putting money on the table.
