Azerbaijan launches military action in Nagorno-Karabakh targeting Armenian forces

Azerbaijan forces engaged Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday, killing at least five people, according to authorities in the breakaway region.

The foreign policy advisor to Azerbaijan’s president told Reuters that their forces had broken through a line of contact with Armenian forces after launching a military action in the region. Armenia denied it has any forces in the area, though in the past many Armenians have volunteered to fight for Nagorno-Karabakh.

At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his support for Azerbaijan and said the imposition of another status the breakaway region “will never be accepted.”

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan referred to Azerbaijan’s action in the territory as “ethnic cleansing,” as protests were held in Yerevan against Azerbaijan.
