Film & Animation
Heute geht es dabei um die Serien LOVE, DEATH & ROBOTS, OATS STUDIOS, FOR ALL MANKIND, THE PENTAVERATE, RAISED BY WOLVES, FOUNDATION, UPLOAD und THE EXPANSE.
Damit ein herzliches Willkommen zu einem neuen Special hier auf CINEMA STRIKES BACK!

In a version of Kolkata, India rendered unliveable by sea-level rise, things take a dark turn when a family of climate change refugees is ambushed by a tiger on the flooded streets.
"Wade" from the exciting Indian animation collective "Ghost Animation", is an award-winning post-apocalyptic action animated short that grapples with what the world will look like in the wake of climate change.
WADE
A Film by Ghost Animation
Directed by Kalp Sanghvi & Upamanyu Bhattacharyya
https://www.instagram.com/wadethefilm/
"Arriving from India on the heels of an illustrious festival run, we’re pleased to present you the online premiere of Wade, an intense post-apocalyptic animation that showcases its creative team’s fresh design ideas in terms of visual style, worldbuilding, and storytelling, all of which they marry to…a deep sense of environmental conscientiousness?
Set in a future version of their home city of Kolkata which has been made uninhabitable by climate change, the film’s directors, Kalp Sanghvi and Upamanyu Bhattacharyya, craft a moody meditation that imagines survival in a post-disaster landscape, only to then explode the proceedings into a visceral action-thriller. While the film’s setting and supernatural undertones appeal on primal geek levels, and a kickass confrontation with a streak of tigers is unquestionably the heart of the film, Wade manages to transcend its stripped-down plotting and feel more substantive than a simple exercise in badassery. Wade’s initial and patient eye to its flooded surroundings, its thoughtful depiction of the group dynamics within its band of refugees, and the artful and inconclusive ending, all shine in the limited space surrounding its big showcase set-piece. Together, they provide the level of detail and specificity that elevates the action as well as justifies the high-concept climate angle of the film.
Animation and environmentalism have been engaged in a fruitful partnership for the last several years, a mini-trend I noted in last year’s review of the French student film, "Migrants". Animation’s freedom to depict whatever is imaginable with a total disregard for live-action cinema’s need for feasibility or budget has allowed it to be a useful storytelling medium for tackling big abstract concepts like climate change via metaphor or allegory. What distinguishes Wade from the other examples I’ve cited is not only in harder edge (ripped off limbs and infanticide make this a film to keep away from the kiddos) but also its status as a project hailing from Southeast Asia, one of the areas most afflicted already by climate change.
In conversing with Sanghvi and Bhattacharyya it became immediately clear how much this premise really inspired Wade. It was at the heart of the team’s crowdfunding pitch in 2016 when they became the fastest project on the Indian site Wishberry to meet their funding goal, and much of the same reasoning persists in 2022, as the directors noted that,
“While there is a lot of nostalgic storytelling about Kolkata, being a space steeped in centuries-old culture and tradition, not very many stories envision the future of the city. Sadly, Kolkata, along with several other cities in the world like Bangkok, Dhaka, Shanghai, New York, and Amsterdam are extremely vulnerable to rising sea levels…

This scene of Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots season 2, episode 1, “Automated Customer Service”, contains spoilers.
Love, Death & Robots continues its homicidal “Pixar-sequel” ways in season 2, episode 1, Oh, they must be rich as hell, too. These senior citizens live in a high-tech, assisted-living community filled with the greatest purveyors of the United States’ finest automated vacuum cleaners: The Vacuubot.
Unfortunately, the protagonist in this story is an old lady trying to get a hold of a human being through the company’s automated line. While waiting, she accidentally activates Purge Mode. This is a function designed to rid all of the house’s pests, including some of the larger ones. Even house pets and humans could be targeted! All of this is communicated to our wicked little Betty White, who looks horrified.
The Vacuum turns into a murderous Wall-E in “Automated Customer Service”. It shoots lasers that kill her fish. This sends her running with her boodle in hand. The automated line, though, is still talking her through her issue and has the helpful suggestion of sacrificing her pet so she can get free. Admirably, she refuses. Instead, she quotes a line I’m guessing she heard from Henry Truman on the back of the train, ‘Fluff and fold, m**********r!” She tosses laundry over the HAL 9000’s next of kin and runs for the door.
Not so fast, the robot has locked every door and window down. As she struggles to pry the sliding glass doors free, the linen is folded, and Vacuubot is ready to kill. That’s until our Golden Girl hears a noise outside, turns, and spots who I can only assume is Richard Mulligan with a shotgun, locked and loaded. As they lock eyes, the psychotic bot shoots tasers through the window and into the poor man’s forehead. As he falls, he tosses the gun to Bea Arthur, who turns to do a split on the ground and makes Vacuubot’s day by shooting straight through his cold little robot heart. I only wish she stood up and said, “I call that a Mulligan.”
She grabs her poodle, drags along the neighbor in the golf cart that saved her, and the automated man on the message tells her that robot she just wasted sent a message to all robots to hunt her down and kill her.
When Love, Death + Robots season 1 hit Netflix back in 2019, it took me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting Black Mirror-level episodes that’d make me laugh, cry, and think in equal measure.
Coming in at 18 episodes, the first season had a lot to offer, from completely inane premises (“When the Yogurt Took Over”) to far-flung apocalyptic futures (“The Secret War”) to everything in between.
With stand-out episodes like “Sonnie’s Edge” and “Three Robots,” there was high hope for Love, Death + Robots season 2. Unfortunately, I have to say I’m disappointed.
‘Love, Death + Robots’ season 2 review (spoiler-free)
First and foremost, the second season comes in at only eight episodes—less than half of the original. It’s difficult to compare the two seasons when the first is so varied in style and story. I would have hoped season 2 would be a more concentrated second outing for the series, but it appears to be the opposite.
Each episode of the first season did what any good short story should do—leave a lasting impression that makes you revisit the concept time and time again to see if you can glean anything new. I’ve watched “Sonnie’s Edge” a dozen or so times, and I never get bored.

While being escorted to a mysteriously irradiated site, a scientist experiences strange visions.
Using a real-time game engine, a motion-capture facility, and off-the-shelf visual assets, acclaimed VFX artist Sava Zivkovic showcases the immense potential of Virtual Production to filter down to indie filmmakers everywhere.

"Did you know that Jon Favreau "shot" the latest Lion King in VR? That the reason The Mandalorian is able to produce such epic landscapes on a TV production timetable is that it is filmed in front of a giant LED screen that adapts to the camera in real-time? Oh, you did. Disney is the biggest name in entertainment and never suffers from a lack of publicity, so it makes sense that you've encountered one of the many trend pieces that describe the emerging field of "Virtual Production" and how it is a "gamechanger" and "the future of filmmaking".
You may know this, but it is one thing for these bleeding-edge tools to be in the hands of creators at multi-billion dollar studios, what you might not know is how close we are to their adoption by the rest of us.
Today's short is truly a fascinating glimpse at the current state of play. From acclaimed VFX artist Sava Zivkovic, Irradiation is a 9min mood piece that crosses sci-fi horror with "Chernobyl"-inspired imagery, creating a heady CG animated short long on atmosphere and menace. Many of the usual hallmarks of a sci-fi proof-of-concept apply here: detailed, photo-realistic characters that might trick more than a few of you, terrific motion, cinematic direction, and detailed environmental worldbuilding are all featured. What is even more notable than the end product though is how it came together; both its workflow and the film's status as a personal passion project.
Using a real-time game engine, a motion-capture facility, and off-the-shelf visual assets, Zivkovic creates a million-dollar-looking animation largely by himself. Irradiation is great, but it's not terribly dissimilar from work we see all around us—in movies and TV, or advertising and gaming. However, as recently as a couple of years ago, you'd expect work of this quality to require at least a small studio and/or for it to take months of labor. Instead, Zikovic produced Irradiation in 4 weeks in a manner more akin to an indie guerrilla shoot...
