A prominent member of the U.K.’s House of Lords is continuing to sound the alarm about the ongoing blockage in Nagorno-Karabakh, a small, landlocked region between Armenia and Azerbaijan, warning that the Armenian Christians living there lack food, resources, and other necessities. Baroness Caroline Cox, a longtime member of Parliament, told CBN's Faithwire about the history of the region and why she continues to passionately advocate for those living there.

"Armenia was the first nation of the word to become Christian ... back in 301 AD," Cox said. "And the little land of Nagorno-Karabakh is part of ancient Armenia and Armenians have lived there for 1,700 years, and you get some of the oldest churches and stone crosses in the world in that little holy land."

That history is threatened, according to Cox, who has been to the region around 90 times. She said the current conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh has bred a "situation of tragedy and of conflict." After some of the latest skirmishes in 2020, Azerbaijan is now controlling a "significant proportion of the land" and, according to Cox, has reportedly destroyed "at least three churches."

"We can't prove that because we can't go there to see," The Crossbench Life peer, who has served in Parliament since 1983, added, expressing worry over the historical stone crosses and Christian monuments. As CBN's Faithwire has extensively reported, the most recent chaos in the region began Dec. 12, when individuals identifying as Azerbaijani protestors reportedly blocked the Lachin corridor, the only roadway into and out of Nagorno-Karabakh, effectively halting food, medicine, and essential transport.

"There's a huge shortage of food and medicines inside ... [and] lot of suffering," Cox said, noting Azerbaijan has also "cut off electricity supply a lot of the time."

"That blockade of the road can ... be the beginning of another genocide of people just being starved to death," Cox added. "No one has challenged or opened up that blockade to the road and, as said, is causing enormous suffering." Watch her share the history — and an important warning.

'Lebanese Armenians Clash With Riot Police Outside Azerbaijan Embassy'.

Hundreds of Lebanese Armenians scuffled with riot police on Thursday outside the Azerbaijan Embassy in northern Beirut during a protest against the Azerbaijani military offensive that recaptured Nagorno-Karabakh from the enclave's separatist Armenian authorities.

Protesters waved flags of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, and burned posters of Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the demonstration in the Ein Aar suburb of the Lebanese capital.

Lebanese riot police lobbed teargas canisters at the protesters after they hurled firecrackers toward the embassy building.

The 24-hour Azerbaijan military blitz last week forced Armenian separatist authorities to agree to lay down weapons and sit down for talks on Nagorno-Karabakh’s “reintegration” into Azerbaijan.

The separatist government said Thursday that it would dissolve itself and the unrecognized republic will cease to exist by year’s end after a three-decade bid for independence.

More than 50% of Nagorno-Karabakh’s population of 120,000 have left the region for Armenia as of nightfall Wednesday. Though Azerbaijani authorities promised to respect the rights of ethnic Armenian, many fear reprisals. The former head of Nagorno-Karabakh’s separatist government was arrested as he tried to cross into Armenia alongside tens of thousands of others who have fled.

During the enclave's independence bid, Lebanese Armenians have sent money and aid, and have actively campaigned in the media in support of Nagorno-Karabakh, which they refer to as Artsakh.

Lebanon is embroiled in an unprecedented economic crisis, which has lately restricted the financial support of the Lebanese Armenians for Nagorno-Karabakh because of banks imposing tight withdrawal limits.

Lebanon, a tiny Mediterranean country of about 6 million people, is home to some 150,000 Armenians. It's one of the largest Armenian communities in the world outside Armenia, most of them descendants of survivors of the 1915 mass killings during the last days of the Ottoman Empire.

At the time, an estimated 1.5 million people were killed in the events that are widely viewed by scholars at the first genocide of the 20th century. Turkey denies the deaths constituted genocide, saying the toll has been inflated and that those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.

Tensions mounted this week in Nagorno-Karabakh, a small, landlocked region between Armenia and Azerbaijan that is home to 120,000 ethnic and Christian Armenians. A ceasefire has been negotiated by Russian peacekeepers a day after Azerbaijan launched a military operation, killing dozens and alarming persecution watchdogs and critics.

Christian Solidarity International, a human rights group, put out a statement decrying the military attack by the "dictatorship of Azerbaijan." "If Azerbaijan’s allies and commercial partners – the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, European Union, Israel, and Switzerland – do not act immediately to restrain it, there will be mass killings and other atrocities against the region’s civilian population," Dr. John Eibner, president of CSI, said in a statement before the ceasefire was reached. "Genocide is imminent."

Days before the most recent chaos in Nagorno-Karabakh, Joel Veldkamp, head of international communications for CSI, took a trip to Armenia and visited the Lachin Corridor, the only roadway into and out of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijani protestors began blocking the road last December, effectively halting food, medicine, and essential transport. Veldkamp told CBN Digital the situation on the ground is dire.

"People are dying," Veldkamp said. "We've had multiple cases of women who lost their babies at the point of delivery because there was no fuel for ambulances to take them to the hospital, and that's the point that we're at right now." He added, "There's over 2,000 people who need surgeries who can't get them. The Red Cross is able to bring a certain number of people out of Karabakh for treatment."

The 120,000 ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh will leave for Armenia as they do not want to live as part of Azerbaijan, Reuters reported on September 24. Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan said the Karabakh Armenians, who feared ethnic cleansing, were likely to leave the region and Armenia was ready to take them in. Meanwhile, ethnic Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh have begun handing over weapons after they were forced to surrender this week, the Russian Defence Ministry said. Tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians are likely to flee Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia says it is prepared to take them in after Azerbaijan’s military victory last week in a conflict dating to the fall of the Soviet Union.
About 120,000 civilians in the region in the South Caucasus will leave for Armenia because they do not want to live in part of Azerbaijan and fear “the danger of ethnic cleansing”, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Sunday.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared victory over the enclave on Thursday, saying it was fully under Baku’s control and the idea of an independent Nagorno-Karabakh was finally confined to history.

Azerbaijan's Ambassador to the UK has told Sky News that he rejects Armenia's claims his country will commit ethnic cleansing.

Elin Suleymanov also said the rights of ethnic Armenians escaping Nagorno-Karabakh will be protected by Azerbaijan.

It comes as 120,000 Armenians living in the war-torn region leave for Armenia, after Azerbaijan regained control of the breakaway region.

Armenia is urging the United Nations to send a mission to Nagorno-Karabakh to monitor the security of ethnic Armenians there. Leaders say thousands of ethnic Armenians are without food or shelter. Azerbaijan has promised to protect human rights in the disputed enclave, which it seized control of this week. A ceasefire with separatists is still holding but Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of planning ethnic cleansing.
Azerbaijan has been tightening its grip on Nagorno-Karabakh since its lightning military offensive, which followed a months-long road blockade.

On April 24, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry protested remarks made by U.S. President Joe Biden on Armenian Remembrance Day.

Biden issued a statement commemorating the 107th anniversary of the start of the genocide, in which between 600,000 and 1.5 million Armenians died though various atrocities during World War I, including executions, forced migration and abuse and neglect in concentration camps.

More than 20 countries worldwide officially recognize the Armenian genocide, including the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany and Russia.

In 2019, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution “affirming the historical facts of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire and honoring the memories of its 1,500,000 victims.”

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said the White House distorted history.

“The attempts to misrepresent the events that happened a century ago and politicize the so-called ‘Armenian genocide’ are unacceptable.”

After 24 hours of fighting, Azerbaijan says it has regained control of the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh after ethnic Armenian separatists agreed to lay down their arms and disband.
Both sides have agreed to meet on Thursday to start talks over the reintegration of the region into Azerbaijan.

Monday marks the 108th anniversary of the beginnings of the Armenian Genocide, and in Southern California, protesters took to the streets to commemorate the tragedy and to call for Azerbaijan to unblock the Lachin corridor.

The collapse has led to almost all the ethnic Armenians living in the region to flee over the border into neighbouring Armenia. Many say they will never return.

The Guardian’s Andrew Roth and Christopher Cherry were at the border as the exodus began. They heard the stories of those fleeing their homeland, sometimes for the third and fourth time, in a conflict that has claimed the lives of thousands.
