Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday stated that he had agreed to a proposal submitted by Russia to hold talks with the president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev next week in Moscow. The negotiations will take place as tensions escalate between the Caucasus neighbours who have been engaged in two wars over disputed territory and who often witness deadly clashes along their border, as the situation generally remains volatile.

It’s been more than eight months since the independent enclave of Nagorno Karabakh has been cut off from the rest of the world. The region, populated mainly by Armenians but internationally recognised as belonging to Azerbaijan, is usually connected to Armenia by the Lachin corridor. Despite calls for free movement on this road from the International Court of Justice, the UN Council, and the European Parliament, Baku refuses to open the crossing. FRANCE 24’s Taline Oundjian followed a delegation of French politicians who came to see the situation on the ground.

#Azerbaijan #Armenia #NagornoKarabakh #Politics
Travel Documentary Armenia. 🇦🇲 Join us on an impactful journey through Yerevan, the capital of the former Soviet Republic of Armenia in the South Caucasus, right during the days when a new war has erupted between Armenia/Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Azerbaijan launched a large-scale attack against Nagorno-Karabakh on September 19, resulting in the tragic loss of hundreds of innocent lives. Although a ceasefire is currently in place, the atmosphere in Armenia (Hayastan) and its capital, Yerevan, remains tense. People are demonstrating and crying out that Azerbaijan is perpetrating a genocide against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.
We take you into the heart of these protests in Yerevan, where citizens are demanding change, including the resignation of Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and urgent assistance for displaced Nagorno-Karabakh residents. Witness the fervent chants and acts of civil action in Republic Square, in front of the Government building and throughout the city.
We explore the human side of this conflict as we engage with protesters, the police, local residents who are providing aid to refugees, a human rights advocate, and the prominent politician Suren Petrosyan, leader of Armenia's Democratic Union Party, who is currently on a hunger strike.
But what is the core of this conflict? The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict has deep historical roots. It's a battle over control and residency in Nagorno-Karabakh (known as Artsakh to Armenians), a region recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan but predominantly inhabited by Armenians. Azerbaijan seeks total control, while Karabakh Armenians fight for self-determination, fearing oppression and even ethnic cleansing under Azerbaijani rule.
This new outbreak of war, disguised as an "anti-terrorism operation" by Azerbaijan, had been brewing for months. As a result, the region's population of 120,000 Armenians faces a dire humanitarian crisis marked by food shortages, power outages, and restricted aid access due to the Lachin corridor's closure by Azerbaijan.
The people of Nagorno-Karabakh, along with their supporters, relatives, and friends in Armenia, feel abandoned, believing that Armenia, the EU, the USA, and even the Russian peacekeepers have not done enough to protect them, resulting in the tragic death of hundreds of Artsakh Armenians.
This situation reminds of the tragic event called the Armenian Genocide from 1915 to 1923. During this time, the Ottoman Empire, which is now modern-day Turkey, systematically killed or deported a large portion of its Armenian population, leading to the death of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians. We pay our respects at Yerevan's Tsitsernakaberd Memorial complex, which is dedicated to the memory of the genocide's victims.
Our journey also takes us to the iconic Mother Armenia statue, a symbol of Armenia, situated in Victory Park and overlooking the capital city. Its location on a hill makes it look like a guardian of the Armenian capital (the Pink City).
This is an eye-opening journey into the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and into the heart of Armenia’s capital city, accompanied by a tour of Yerevan's most significant landmarks, including Republic Square, Khachkar Square (near Vernissage), Freedom Square, Alexander Tamanyan Park, the Cascade Complex, Mother Armenia Statue, Victory Park, Tsitsernakaberd, and the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex with its eternal flame.

The leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia argued openly in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday in testy exchanges that underlined the extent of their dispute over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
During a meeting in Moscow, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan raised the issue of the Lachin corridor while Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev listened to his concerns with a smirk, before Putin closed off the conversation, noting that the topic was sensitive.
"We will now have the opportunity, as we agreed, to talk about everything calmly in a businesslike manner in a trilateral format," Putin said before turning to other matters.

Kim Kardashian West is donating $1 million to the Armenia Fund amid the country’s ongoing conflict with Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan and Armenia continued to report violations of a Moscow-brokered cease-fire, although major military engagements appeared to remain on hold Sunday.
Azerbaijan said at least seven civilians were killed and 33 others were injured when Ganca, the country’s second-largest city, was bombed Sunday by Armenians. Armenia and the defense ministry of the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno-Karabakh denied firing toward Ganca, while saying two civilians were killed in the city of Hadrut.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hosted his counterparts from the two former Soviet republics in Moscow for negotiations that ran for more than 10 hours overnight Friday to Saturday. The cease-fire was to start at 12 p.m. local time Saturday to allow the sides to exchange prisoners and recover bodies of those killed in fighting that flared up two weeks ago.
The situation is relatively calm now along the contact line, Arayik Harutyunyan, Nagorno-Karabakh’s president, said at a media briefing on Sunday. Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry reported continued fighting in the south of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Lavrov spoke with his colleagues again on Saturday, and they reiterated their commitment to the cease-fire, the ministry in Moscow said.
A solution will depend on compromise, and “Azerbaijan is not ready,” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in an interview with German ZDF TV channel. Armenia has said it’s defending Nagorno-Karabakh’s right to self-determination after the Armenian majority declared independence amid the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

On 19 September 2023, Azerbaijan launched a major new offensive against the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh. However, within 24 hours, the territory had surrendered. Since then, there has been a steady stream of refugees as tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians flee. But this exodus has sparked a fierce debate. While Armenia has called it ethnic cleansing, Azerbaijan strongly rejects this accusation. Instead, it argues that people are leaving voluntarily. So, how exactly should we understand their departure?
The conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh (also known as Nagorny-Karabakh) came to be seen as one of the most bitter and prolonged on the international stage. Emerging at the end of the Cold War, as the Soviet Union collapsed, it centred on efforts by ethnic Armenians to break away and form their own state, the Republic of Artsakh. This led to a brutal three-year war that eventually saw Armenian forces secure control of Nagorno-Karabakh and many surrounding Azerbaijani districts - leading to the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of ethnic Azeris. But while efforts were made to resolve the conflict, Azerbaijan used its oil and gas wealth to rebuild its armed forces. This led to a new war in 2020, which saw Azerbaijan seize back the occupied districts and part of Nagorno-Karabakh. Since then, a new peace process has been taking place. But frustrated by the lack of progress, Azerbaijan took matters into its own hands, overrunning Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023. But as most of the territory's estimated 120,000 Armenian inhabitants flee, Baku and Yerevan, and their international supporters, are locked in an angry exchange as to whether this amounts to ethnic cleansing. So, how should we understand it? And, perhaps more to the point, is there any hope that some Armenians will stay, and others will eventually return?

Azerbaijan has set up a checkpoint on the only land link between Armenia and the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. That's sparked an angry response from its Armenian arch-rival. Armenians are protesting due to their government's handling of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Anti-government demonstrators have taken to the streets of the Armenian capital Yerevan for a third day to protest against the government's handling of the crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh. Demonstrators say the government has made too many concessions to Azerbaijan and are demanding their Prime Minister resign. Ethnic Armenian separatists in the Nagorno-Karabakh region agreed to dismantle their forces on Thursday, following a 24 hour military offensive by Azerbaijan.
The UN is calling for more dialogue between ethnic Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan after the first round of talks ended without agreement.
Both parties traded accusations at an urgent UN Security Council meeting on Thursday. The Armenian side said Azerbaijani forces had violated a ceasefire, while Azerbaijan insisted Armenia was peddling disinformation to the international community.
Western powers are calling for security guarantees in Nagorno-Karabakh -- as many of the region's majority Armenian residents seek shelter.

The government of Nagorno-Karabakh is dissolving itself after decades of struggle for autonomy from Azerbaijan, just days after Azerbaijani forces carried out a military blitz to seize the breakaway region, which has a majority of ethnic Armenians. More than half the territory's 120,000 people have reportedly fled to Armenia, while thousands more remain without food, shelter and clean drinking water. "Basically, this is ethnic cleansing," says Roubina Margossian, managing editor of _EVN Report_, an independent media outlet based in Armenia. "This is the victory of a dictatorship over a democracy."

Thousands of ethnic Armenians fled Nagorno-Karabakh — an Armenian-populated enclave of Azerbaijan — on Monday, after the decades-old separatist state and its fighters were defeated in a supposed “anti-terrorism” operation conducted by Azerbaijan’s military forces.
Following the purportedly “illegally-settled” Armenian’s army defeat and surrender, at least 6,650 refugees successfully crossed into Armenia on Monday, officials confirmed. The numbers continue to climb.
Leadership of the 120,000 Armenians who once called Nagorno-Karabakh home said its people do not want to live as part of Azerbaijan anymore and are heading to Armenia in fear of persecution and ethnic cleansing — which Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says has already begun.
The ethnic Armenian leadership said it would remain in place until those who want to leave what they call Artsakh are able to escape. Residents were urged to hold back from crowding roads, but promised free fuel in aid of their departures.
