7 Facts About Lions:
1. NEARLY ALL WILD LIONS LIVE IN AFRICA, BUT ONE SMALL POPULATION EXISTS ELSEWHERE…
Nearly all wild lions live in Africa, below the Sahara Desert, but one small population exists around Gir Forest National Park in western India. Lions in west and central Africa are more closely related to these Asiatic lions in India, than to those found in southern and east Africa.
2. THEY CAN WEIGH 30 STONE
On average, males weigh 190kg (almost 30 stone) and females weigh 126kg (almost 20 stone). They need this weight and power behind them to hunt large prey and defend their pride.
3. THEY START OFF SPOTTY
Young lions have rosettes and spots on their sandy coats, but these generally disappear as they mature.
4. MALES’ MAGNIFICENT MANES TELL A STORY
Male lions grow impressive manes the older they get. These manes grow up to 16cm long and are a sign of dominance. The older they get, the darker their manes go. As well as attracting females, their manes may also protect their neck and head from injuries during fights.
5. CUBS ARE REARED TOGETHER
A pride of lions is usually made up of related females and their cubs, plus a male or small group of males who defend their pride. The lionesses rear their cubs together and cubs can suckle from any female with milk.
6. LIONS CAN GET THEIR WATER FROM PLANTS
Lions are highly adaptable and can live in very dry areas like the Kalahari Desert. Here they get most of their water from their prey and will even drink from plants such as the Tsamma melon.
7. LIONS ARE BIG EATERS
Lions can eat up to 40kg of meat in a single meal - around a quarter of their body weight. Their tongues have sharp-pointed rasps, called papillae, which are used to scrape meat off the bones.
What makes lions social? Are they really lazy—or just very patient? Craig Packer, director of the Serengeti Lions Project, has spent decades deciphering the riddles of one of nature's most familiar creatures.

The lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family and a member of genus Panthera. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996, as populations in African range countries declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes of concern. The West African lion population is listed as Critically Endangered since 2016.

Two eaglets recently hatched at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. Known for now as DC2 and DC3, the bald eagle chicks have been enjoying their first meals of fish, which the parents have been taking turns collecting. The nesting pair, named "Mr. President" and the "First Lady," had their first eaglet a year ago in a nest at the top of a tulip poplar, which prompted the installation of two video cameras. Volunteers organized by the American Eagle Foundation take turns operating the cameras as people from around the world watch live. See the adorable highlights from DC2 and DC3's first days.
